Alpine strawberries

I don't think they'll mind which compost, as long as it's not compost straight off the compost pile which would be too rich for most plants.

I think you'll have trouble with any plants under an established larger tree because the soil will get very dry in summer (combination of tree roots sucking moisture and the canopy blocking rainfall to the ground below).
Alpines do well in damper, shadier corners of the garden where other fruits don't ripen properly. An hour of sun per day (or several hours of sun per week) is all they need, unlike most fruit plants which need several hours per day.
I've managed to get alpines to grow and crop adequately where there is no direct sun (e.g. in the shade of a fence), as long as there is nothing above them to block out the sky.

If they are staying in the compost for good then use John Innes No. 3, I grew some white strawberries (Pineberries) from seed last year in JI 3 and had a good crop.
