Default 48 strawberry plants & 6 grow bags for £2

I went to another garden centre today, not my usual one. I was looking for various bits and pieces including mulch/compost, etc. The lady was really helpful when I told her what I was looking for and said to me 'have you seen our strawberry bags?'

They had 2 pallets piled high with grow bags with 8 strawberry plants in each. She pointed to their huge greenhouses and told me they only use the plants for one year then bin the entire lot, including the mulch. I got 6 bags of mulch with 48 strawbs plants for £2. She said if I had van I could go back and get as many as I wanted. Now that's a bargain.

Was going to used some of it mixed in with my new top soil (heavy on the old clay) for my spud containers and to mix into the rasied beds.

I read somewhere that you get a better crop from 2nd year strawbs than first. Is this true? I'm going to have about 85 strawberry plants, I see a lot of strawberry jam in the not to distant future. Mmm, strawberry teas!

Couldn't tell you about the second year crop thing - don't seem to have kept a strawb plant over winter till this year!! Good luck with them.

Sorry Dee, didn't notice your post until tonight. Trinity Garden Centre near Brechin. Ask them and they'll take you to the big pallet out the back - 3 bags for a pound, 10 strawbs per bag. Might get some more this week, it's lovely and mulchy and perfect to mix in with my clay soil.
