| I had a free fig tree from an offer and its now come and am a bit dissapointed! Ok - so its free and I didnt know what to expect but its about 4 inches high!! Think I will go to a few garden centres and have a look at them as I now have got myself all into the idea of one. Looking at this tiny one I have it will take years to fruit! whats the average size of a fig tree which you buy? |

| I bought a fig tree about 8" tall back in Feb. Its in the G/house at present. It has full leaves and two fruits already (plus one that got knocked off)

| I got one from Wilco as well. Looked like a little stick when I got it. It's now about 24" high and full of big leaves. Mines in a 12" pot in the back room of the house at the moment. Last edited by esrikandan; 24-04-2008 at 11:26 AM. |

| Mine is in a pot outside and still looks like a stick. It's definitely alive and there are some buds swelling on the sides but I'm getting impatient for it to get leaves. May put in the greenhouse for a few weeks and see if that helps.

| Mine had some little figs on it when I had it delivered but the stem was very bare with no leaves / branches. However, looked yesteaday and noticed some leaves beginning to come so all good and I'll be leaving it in it's sheltered spot by the garage door.

| They are supposed to be frost hardy so mine will be out all the time once it has acclimatised. It has stayed out a couple of mild nights but I bring it in if it is very wet or windy at the moment. Won't be long till it is out now. |

| Thanks Again Shirley, I've moved them from my living room to kitchen to get more light, seem to have improved over the last couple of days! I reckon I'll put them out each morning for the next fortnight then leave them out permanently. Cheers Danny |

| Its likely to be Brown Turkey, they're fairly ubiquitous in this country, as they're cold tolerant. But there are others - some sites will help you identify by leaf and fruit - so later maybe you might find out! ![]()

| Hi folks I think you're all coddling your fig trees unnecessarily. Having them indoors (assuming house, not greenhouse, but also greenhouse) and outdoors and indoors will just confuse them. Figs are very tolerant of bad weather, cold and rain. That's how they survive and become mature trees. Mine have been out all winter, down to -8 on several nights, and are now sprouting very nicely and one of those is a tiddler. I leave them out (and the kiwis which are also very hardy) and just move the potted figs closer to the house, not indoors at all.

| We have a Brown Turkey fig and as soon as we got it, we dug a hole, lined it with paving slabs and then put it in a bucket and put it in a hole. Figs are rampant and will grow very, very quickly unless restrained. Brown Turkey are hardy to our climate according to the blurb. A large fig tree down the road in the garden had loads of figs on it. Lots of places suggest putting several inches of hardcore in the hole before planting the fig to keep it under control. |

| Here are my babies - five littluns (White Marseilles, Brunswick, Hardy Chicago and two Wilko ones (probs Brown Turkey) and one bigun, which is definitely Brown Turkey. ![]() ![]() (Excuse my neighbours bins and 'wilderness' garden in the background).
