  • Wormery advice please;

    I'm starting with the basics here as a newbie.

    I would like to buy a wormery and have been looking at two to start with;

    https://www.originalorganics.co.uk/t...er-wormery.htm

    or

    Buy Worm Cafe with Value Pack from Wiggly Wigglers

    I want a big one to avoid having to put waste in the bin, I like the look of the tray ones, aside from that I'm a beginner.

    Does anyone have any recommendations? and advice; where to site it? Do they like shade? Sun?

    Idiots guide please before I spend a fortune on something that I'm not successful with?

    Thanks in advance.

      Wormeries | Norfolk County Council

      They offer the 'can o worms' one for £84.00 - but I can't seem to find the equivalent on the wiggly site to see if it's cheaper, and I thought the square one would be more practical - but if it saves money I'm in!

        We've got a very successful wormery in a couple of polystyrene vegetable boxes that a greengrocer was throwing out. We cut holes in the base of each box, more near the top of the sides. It stands on the upturned lid of one box rather than using a whole box, and cost nothing.

        Oh, except for the brandling worms that came from a fishing tackle shop for just over £1.

        This is one of the sites we looked at for 'how to' advice, and here's a thread on a fishing forum.

          I'd recommend ebay or freecycle before shelling out for one.

            How to run a wormery

            Build your own

            Here's ours. I emptied it this week, and got a bucket of good quality potting compost from it, which isn't bad seeing as they've not been fed all summer apart from the odd apple when I remember.
            I'll try harder this year. It's only a fun learning tool for the kids really, the main compost comes from our daleks

              OK, I've gone economy and am looking to build my own. You've all convinced me. I have to because as part of the move I am now not working for a year, so whilst the temptation is always to shell out and get something quickly, I do need to be 'sensible'.

              Where did you get your boxes twosheds? They are perfect.

                My wormery isn't home-made, it's a bought one, so in the £60 region I should think (we used Morrison/Tesco vouchers for schools)

                  A friend of ours has one they put together themselves using dark coloured stacking storage boxes, I think they came from one of the budget shops.

                    Do they have to be dark coloured? Mostly they are see-through aren't they, the cheap ones?

                      I've never seen a clear one, myself. Clear plastic tends to let light through, which heats up too much and grows green algae (slime).
                      Also, make sure your plastic is UV stable: I've used those clear plastic boxes on the lotty before (as cloches) and they shatter into a million sharp pieces after a season or two

                        Thankyou.

                        I'm off today to Roys (which will mean something to Norfolk residents only I fear) to have a look.

                        Finally FINALLY I can leave the house - I've been unable to drive for a week after a knee op, and I can't take it any more. I'm going out. I may not be able to make it into town from the car park when I get there, but I'm going anyway.

                          Clear plastic would let too much light through, the worms would hide in the middle as they are photosensitive.

                          Silver boxes work brilliantly as they reflect the sun, and doesn't heat up as much

                          Good Luck

                            It's getting time to think about insulating the worm boxes now for the winter. Zazen recommends stuffing them with shredded paper inside, which I'll do this week, and I'll also put a piece of old carpet over the outside of it

                              I don't bother insulating, there isn't really any need although they do slow down in the cold my worms have quite happily survived the past two freezing winters without any blankets
