  • Where to keep bokashi bin?

I have just taken delivery of 2 bokashi bins as we now have council food waste containers and I refuse to store any meat bones etc in a bin by the front door so this gave me the push to get the bokashi bins and be able to totally compost any waste

    but...

we have a tiny kitchen so I'm trying to find the best place to keep it.. 3 options:

    1. buy new kitchen bin (which dogs cannot open(!)), move kitchen bin and recycle boxes out of kitchen cupboard and put next to radiator and put bokashi bins into the cupboard.

    2. keep bokashi bins next to radiator - any faq's say keep the bin warm but would the radiator be too warm? We don't have our heating on high or for too long but the radiators can still get hot.

    3. keep it outside?

    any thoughts? bec xx

I keep mine under the sink so it's nice and handy but a friend of mine keeps hers loose out in the room and that works fine. The lids are very tight so the dog can't knock the lid off and they don't smell at all unless you forget to drain them. If you don't have the radiator on too much then I wouldn't worry about that and if there is a problem you can always move them and go to a Plan B.

I wouldn't keep them outside as I'd not use them much then, especially when it's cold and wet, you need it to be convenient. I do put mine outside to finish off but not while I'm filling.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      Thanks for your reply

As much as I agree with recycling.. all the bins we have are driving me nuts! I have left the bokashi bins in front of the radiator for now as to have them under the sink would mean buying a dog proof general waste bin AND having am
ll the recycling bins on show... will see how we get on and only make changes if we need to.

I had a similar problem with storing something in front of a radiator, although in my case not a bokashi bin, the principle is the same. I basically insulated the item from the radiator. The stuff I used was a thin sheet of polystyrene with a silvery reflective surface on one side. I just cut out a piece the same size as my item and stuck it on with a bit of tape, with the silvery side facing the radiator. This reflects back the direct heat away from the item. That would protect your bokashi from the fierce heat of the radiator.
