I have 2 in my front garden: I'm lazy and am letting nature take its course: fungi are gradually breaking them down.

Not that lazy though: I dug up most of the lawn & turned it over to flower beds, because I hate mowing.

If you live in the south then they are a great habitat for stag beetles.

Totally depends on the type of the tree.. some trees like to have deep roots right under the stem and becomes more difficult if the side roots are preventing from reaching the main thick roots. On the other hand some trees have a good root system without any thick roots they are easy to remove with little effort..
I have removed lot of trees and their stumps from my garden in the last couple of years..Start digging a circle around the stump and cut any side roots either with axe or with some other tool, when u reach around 40 to 50 cm deep then start digging towards the root making a cone. If the stump has been dead for couple of years and is rotting, the removal is much more easier

I posted this on a different thread but the farmers behind me wanted to get rid of a many tree stumps. They were a few years old so had completely dried out.
They bored holes about 4" deep and put something inside (couldnt quite work out what) and set fire to them. They smouldered away for a few days before finally disintegrating.
This was a couple of years ago, but if memory serves they were apple tree trunks.
Dont know if thats any help?
