  • Old Compost In Your Compost Bin?

    Hears goes,

Maybe another of my stupid questions but do people put old / used compost back in their bin to mix with new ingredients?
    Cheers

Yeah I do, I had heard it gets things off to a flying start. Also it keeps some of the worms in there

I will take some of the old but unused compost to put in the newly started bin because as Fiona says it will have the worms already in it and I think it gives it a kick start.
I will also, however, put used compost in occasionally, provided it was not used for potatoes and tomatoes or anything else that may appear to have suffered from a disease. I do this after bedding out as it's usually the stuff left in the tray that also contains the weeds I collected whilst planting.
My potato, tomato compost from containers goes in a separate bin and at the end of the season goes on the bed that contained the potato crop.
Generally though my clean used compost just goes onto a bed and gets mixed in.

I sure do. But then, I do a lot of stuff you're not supposed to.

I think you have to be careful what you had in it previously, and why you're throwing it. If it was used on blighted tomatoes for example - Noooooo!

I do too - but as Wayne says above, I'm careful to (try to) ensure that I do not send any nasties to the compost heap

Tomato/potato blight is an airborne not a soil borne disease and becomes harmless after a period of time in the ground so putting your used compost in the bin will do no harm I do this with mine and have never had a problem.
