  • Horse Manure

Have a riding school near us, and on my journey to work through the country lanes I'm always splattering up my car with loads of horse pap.

I don't have a compost bin, but if I buy one, can I lob it in there and leave it to rot down? Do I need to add owt else to it? I've never done compost before, so am completely clueless.

Yup, mix it with some twiggy stuff. Unless it's straw-based, then you probably won't need to. Grass mowings and horse sh*t rot down well together too. If it is shavings-based it will take longer to rot than straw.

I leave mine in plastic bags to sweat and store for six months. It's easy to transport from stableyard to wherever you're storing it, and easy to transport from there to the garden/lottie, ie it saves you having to dig and barrow it.

You could try using the search facility on here, there have been several threads recently on this subject.

I collect mine in bags from the stables - they leave it outside for anyone who can use it - and I shove it in the boot of the car. When I get to the lottie I either put it in a compost bin dedicated to horse poo - or I put it in layers in with the general mix. At the moment I have 2 bins with mixed and 2 with horse poo only. Not sure how long it is going to take but I have a spare bin to turn it all into and mix it all around! I do think it needs to stand for a good few months though!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks - I may pop up there, it may be easier than my shovelling it in bags then into my car. Well, i'll take the wifes, as its not going in my baby!!

Theres just so much of it. Remember the scene in jurassic park.. the guy says that's one big pile of sh*t ? Well that's not a patch on the mound I ploughed through earlier. It's even on the roof of my bloody car!

must have been about 20 horses chatting and dropping heh.
