Default Free USED Coffee Grounds from Starbucks

Hi All

Just thought I let you know Starbucks are giving away FREE, USED coffee Grounds.

They are used to help the ground like a compost

look at www.starbucks.com/aboutus.compost.asp

Hubby got them, he has told they are in the Starbucks coffee with a sign saying - are u a keen gardener,

Starbucks must go through this stuff at a rate of knots.

cheers

Yes, there's been a couple of posts about this in the past. The ones near me didn't used to do it but noted before Christmas that they've got a big bin full of it now all packaged up like their fresh stuff so there's a fair bit of waste wrapping unfortunately. Don't need any myself as OH brings home several plastic tub fulls each week from work and if I get anymore I'll end up with neat coffee in the garden!

yep I do agree about the packaging but I might try and see if Starbucks will reuse it for more used coffee or I will try and use it for other stuff.

Alison, does it work then? checking before I get loads

Hi
You can persuade the other big coffee places to do it, they are a bit bemused but quite willing to shovel the grounds into a big black dustbin bag for you. Have tried Costa and Cafe Nero with success, bit embarassing trying to explain about compost heaps to the Italian staff with a queue growing behind you but needs must.
Has anyone tried collecting hair from hairdressers and old beer leavings from pubs??
Sue

I was a bit sceptical about it to start with so asked a load of the other grapes and it seems that they're a great thing, even better if free! Not tried the hairdressers but do put the mountains of animal fur we have round the house and some of the stuff out the dyson in the wormery - they seem to munch their way through it OK and it helps to stop the wormery getting too wet.

Fortunately we don't have Starbucks in Loughborough (yet) but we do get through ground coffee between us, hence compost quite a lot.

Only problem I have with it is that it stinks something awful when it rots down!

I use the Starbucks coffee grounds & they are great to add to the compost heap & sprinkle neat round plants as a soil improver but agree that after I've done it the garden smells like a caffeine addicts heaven!

One of the many in Southampton (the longest open one I think) got a visitation from me today and were very helpful. Not at all surprised to be asked.

I now have a regular supply of coffee grounds from them as we are not drinking as much at the moment.

The coffee has improved since it opened too.

Will be picking up a bag full tomorrow from one of the THREE in Guildford and putting on beds not just to feed soil but to act as a cat deterrent as read in GYO today that it keeps them off. I've also read in very old gardening book that coffee grounds help deter carrot fly. Will put it to test this year. Starbucks were really helpful. Thanks for this useful tip.

I have got some dustbins for this years fight against the carrot fly. Alledgely theycant fly over 30 inch off the ground.....which I think is rubbsh at we are 1000ft above sea level and they are all over the place.

StarBucks stuff is good, I source mine from my local coffee shop by the carrier bag load every few days and have so far stock piled 10 lit of the stuff ready for March. I tend to use it as a mix with compost when potting on, it's one of the best rooting mix's I've ever used and really recommend it.

I organised to collect some and they hadn't. I keep forgetting to go back. Ie I realise the day after I am supposed to collect it. Will try my local coffee shop instead.
