  • Composting tree shreddings

I came across an article several years ago that stated mixing the leaves of different types of trees helped them decompose (make compost) quicker, can anyone tell me if it will it be the same for any shredded material
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

When I had my lottie, I always use to put woodchips in the compost as it did indeed accelerate the process. Shredded material breaks down quicker than whole leaves/stalks.

I mixed a load with some muck one year and then put it on a mulch. Since then I have just layered it on as a mulch. It is good on paths where it will rot down and can be put onto beds then.

Mixing it in the composter or better still horse/pig muck helps it all break down better. Add some urine as a further accelerant for good measure. Like alldigging says added to muck is best, but mother nature will return all organic stuff to soil sooner or later. The best mix is between green and brown with approximately 1/3 to 2/3 and keep it just moist. Turning will give more oxygen to speed the process and adding stale beer or cola also feeds the little helpers and makes it happen faster.

        P.S.
Don't bury fresh tree/hedge chippings because they absorb a lot of nitrogen to break down and rob the plants. Laying on top as a mulch does not starve the plants and will breakdown in a year or so to nice rich soil.

Perhaps I put the question wrong, if mixing different varieties of tree leaves accelerates the composting process, will the same happen if you mix different types of shredded trees.? ps where would I get urine

Tree leaves won't accelerate the compost heap as leaves take a long time to decompose, however shredded branches will speed up the process, I heard you can get urine straight from the horses mouth...............
