  • can o worms

I in my wisdom 6 months ago invested in a can o worms wormery. I have been letting it do its own thing just topping up and feeding. Today I tapped some fluid of and it is all sludge, there are worms in amongst it and what a mess. I have a worm bin on the lottie and that works well with the clear liquid coming out and no worms in it. I would of brought it home but the OH made me get rid of my home made water butts and told me the the colour (blue) did not fit in with the garden. That is why I bought the said worm bin. I feel the tap is to low down in the sump and therefore does not seperate the fluid. Am I missing some thing here? should there be a kind of filter fitted? is the one for my wormery missing?. If any of you use the same sort of wormery, do you have the same problem? have you over come it some how? I considerd using a hanging basket liner or similar but would it work? all info would be interesting. thanks to all.

Have you left the tap on the can-o-worms closed for a long time? They do generate a lot of liquid, not just the worms but also from rain. Maybe the residual water 'backed up' into the lowest section?

The tap on our c-o-w has broken so we just leave it in the open position and put a container under it to catch the liquid 'worm wee'.

I leave my tap open all the time too and let it drain directly into a watering can (if the look is important then buy a nicer looking one ) and this works well. When I left it shut to start with I seemed to get a lot of drowning worms, this way if they explore down into the sump then it's not full of water and they can get out therefore not worm carnage!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
