Notes and thoughts and sometimes photos of my attempt to tame my overgrown allotment; and hopefully one day grow fruit and vegetables on it.

Potatoes and Basil.

Posted 13-04-2008 at 11:15 PM by thyme
Went to allotment on Thursday, planted a few rows of potatoes: Pentland Javelin and a couple of rows of Pink Fir Apple not sure if it is too early to plant those but I was concerned that they were looking a bit sad i.e, sprouting shoots looked long and straggly but the potatoes themselves were getting smaller and shrivelling maybe they always do that when they are chitting.

As I was talking to another allotment holder they spotted a fox; as I turned to see it I was a bit shocked at...

Photos taken of the allotment that I have taken on as a rescue mission.

The rhubarb was a nice suprise as it was hidden by overgrown grass until I bought a rake and started using it at the allotment one day. The tree is starting to come into leaf and blossom it is a plum and needs some work doing on in it June when the risk of spreading silver leaf has decreased.

Posted 21-03-2008 at 12:41 AM by thyme
This morning I moved some of the germinated seeds (tomato and mixed Italian lettuce) to a brighter windowsill. Later sorted through seed packets and then sowed some more vegetables, Kelvendon Wonder and Sugar peas, beetroot, Snapdragons and Poached Egg Flowers for use on the allotment. I again used peat pots and locally purchased compost which seems to be better than the one I used last year for seedlings. Quite shocked by the strange appearance of the beetroot seeds, they looked very old and wizend...

Wednesday. More Delving Than Digging Today.

Posted 20-03-2008 at 12:37 AM by thyme
I am hoping to visit the allotment tomorrow for a couple of hours as I am still trying to get an area cleared that I can plant the seed potatoes in.

I’ve been reading up about growing the vegetables in raised beds, but that will not be possible this year. All my planting this year will be on a trial and error basis. But whatever I grow will be more than I did last year, as I only raised lettuce in a grow bag and strawberries in a narrow south facing border of the garden.
