Notes and thoughts and sometimes photos of my attempt to tame my overgrown allotment; and hopefully one day grow fruit and vegetables on it.
Todays thought: How not to plan an allotment.

I thought it would be a good idea to draw up a plan of what I wanted to plant on my new allotment later in the year. However they still have n't confirmed the exact location of it. It was while I was trying to think of a planting plan that I realised I had never paid much attention to what veggies need to grow well. I know that the soil I will be planting in will probably light and sandy.
I seem to know which garden plants like sunny areas and which thrive in the shade, it seems almost instinctive but I must have acquired that knowledge from somewhere. I just do n't seem to have a clue where to start with the allotment plans. My first thought was well I'll just plant some potatoes at the right time of year and a few rows of other veggies. However the more I think about it the more likely it seems that if I do a bit of research and plant things that like the conditions they are given the more likely my efforts are to get good results. Even then I guess the random effect of the weather will be the wild card in the pack.
When I was cooking Sunday lunch I thought all I really want it to grow enough vegetables to be able to cook with things from the allotment most of the time. I'd like to experiment with raised beds but am not sure I will be capable of making them look tidy enough so maybe I will just try a test area to start with. The fact that some of the allotments in the area look immaculately set out makes me feel as if I will have to mark out the rows with a yard stick and a set square. Oh well, I expect it will be a case of trial and error, a lot of trials and a lot of errors.
The day I cook a dinnner with home grown veg. seems to be a long way off at the moment.

| | Hello buddy, have a go at raised beds. They take some time to erect but keep things nice and tidy and are easier to maintain. Check out my album. |

| | Hello and thank you I've looked at the photos and am trying not to feel envious of how tidy that looks. I need work towards some areas with easier maintence like the raised beds you have. I will try to post some pictures of my allotment in my blog soon. |
