Then we built a raised bed..

...rather than dig up more lawn we had a go at making a raised bed. We grew carrots, lettuce a few parsnips in it last year but we weren't very succesful.

The first raised bed is the one on the right of the picture.

This year we've gone a stage further and built some more. The one on the left for carrots etc. I've filled it with a more sandy mix than the others. You can see my Heath Robinson attempt at a barrier against the dreaded carrot fly. On the opposite side of the same stretch of garden we made the one that this year I plan to put sweetcorn, beans & squash in the 3 sisters way. The sweetcorn I sowed under the bottle cloches are doing nothing so I've got some going elsewhere ready to plant in if they don't show.

We also built the smaller one for courgettes and other squashes
