Onions and spuds

Posted 25-01-2008 at 07:53 PM by rustylady
Daughter went to Wilko on a shopping spree. Brought back onion sets (several varieties) and seed potatoes, also several varieties. Have put some of the onion sets in cell trays to give them a start as the lottie is still sodden. Will save the rest for later. So far in cells are Red Karmen, Turbo, Centurion and Sturon.
Seed potatoes, we have one first early - Arran Pilot, 3 x 2nd earlies (Charlotte, Maris Peer and Kestrel) and 1 x Maincrop (Rooster) red variety. This year I would like...

January 20th 2008

Mild today, but grey and damp. Cleaned lots of pots, trays and labels ready for the new season. Sowed Brunswick red onion seed, PSB summer sprouting (Suttons) and set Sturon onion sets in cell trays to give them a flying start (I hope). Still no sign of the Duraldo onion seed germinating, but Dr Hessayon says 3 weeks, so they have a few days to go yet.
Cleared the dead chive tops, they are re-shooting already. Violets in flower, a few snowdrops flowering. The borders could do with forking...

Couldn't wait any longer

Cleaned the pots, the propagator and the seed trays and couldn't resist sowing something, anything. I realise it's far too early for most things, so settled for sowing onion seed and some parsley (in the propagator).

In the deep midwinter

Posted 29-12-2007 at 06:01 PM by rustylady
Well, its 29th December but it doesn't feel like it. Only a couple of frosts so far, and the first violet flower is open in the back garden. Also a few flowers on the forsythia behind the shed. Went to the lottment today, planted out overwintering spring onions that have been sitting in cells in the cold greenhouse - they have two choices!! Broad beans (Aquadulce), onions and garlic looking good. Leeks small but beautifully formed. Had a bonfire in my incinerator (worth its weight in gold)...

Sunday before Xmas

Haven't managed to get back to the lottie since 17th. Manic at work. Still have more broad beans (Sutton) to plant out but they should be OK in the cold greenhouse for a little while. Frost this week, and freezing fog this morning. The blackbirds have at last started eating the pyracantha berries.
