Freakin windy !

Posted 12-11-2008 at 11:10 PM by sewer rat
I swear I thought my polytunnel was gonna vanish on Tuesday but it held, although the end frame that seemed to take the full force of the wind does seem to be leaning in a bit as opposed to being vertical.
I have started to clear my courgette patch up and the 250 tyres I used to grow them in are now forming a windbreak down one length of tunnel.
I'm hoping to "accquire some 30 railway sleepers over this winter and the idea is to use them to form raised beds/walkways in the tunnel...

Sunday 11th November....

Not much happening in the garden except to say SOME OF THE SPRING BULBS ARE COMING UP. They're in a pot near the house. They shouldn't be popping up now, there's a real chance of them beind killed off if there's a frost. I think its because of the sheltered position and mild wet weather we've had (apart from that cold snap a few weeks ago). Well, we'll see. I'll keep an eye on things and report back.
I haven't been out and raked the leaves as its very wet and so the lawn is covered....

Chesnok Wight, none showing.

Early Purple Wight, 6 showing, I think the 7th maybe "failure to launch", but time will tell.

Elephant Garlic, nothing showing yet.

Iberian Wight, 1 showing.

Lautrec Wight, 7 out of 7, well done lads!

Provence Wight, 3 just peeping out of the soil.

Solent Wight, despite having 14 cloves...

In the beginning ...

Posted 06-11-2008 at 05:33 PM by HotStuff
Before this year I'd never really grown anything. It started off with a couple of herb pots from the supermarket so I could have fresh Basil whenever I needed it, then I discovered one of my neighbours had a chilli plant and as I love hot spicy food I started growing chillies. Things escalated and over the summer I built a greenhouse and also some raised beds. As well as chilli I love garlic and my aim is to be "self sufficient" for garlic next year. To this end I bought the Garlic Lovers...
