First cabbage

Posted 13-05-2008 at 10:16 AM by Cutecumber
Yahoo! Picked my first hearted cabbage of the season this morning!

It's a green pointed type, Advantage variety, which can be grown at any time of year. I sowed in February and it started life in a greenhouse, growing to maturity in a pot outdoors with a cauliflower and two lettuce for company.

I also picked a fully grown Little Gem lettuce, which looks great - it seems a lot heavier than some I've grown before, so hopefully the heart is good and dense.

Early harvest!

Posted 09-05-2008 at 11:04 AM by Cutecumber
Exciting times... I harvested the first new season crop at the weekend - some spring onions. They were started at the end of January in the greenhouse and have been outside since March. Some of the lettuce is ready too, but I am letting it head up a bit more.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've just finished the last of the 2007 crops - some leaf beet.

This is the first year that we've been able to harvest something fresh from the garden every month and it's...

However my peas are sprouting as are my broad beans, and radishes. My shallots and onions are making a move too. Finished planting out the last of my three varieties of spuds - due to problems and the lies that suppliers tell you, I gave up on the planned Edzell Blues and planted 50kg of Red Duke of York instead. The tunnel...

05/05/008

Another warm and rainy day. Stephen came round in the morning just as I was going out - nice to see him. Went out searching for wild garlic without any joy, though found huge clumps of evening primrose. Bees are finally back in their hives - they swarmed yesterday and Rupert had to come round and help Zaz get them back. Didn't get round to much gardening, but while making dinner, decided to go for it. Planted extra onions, two rows of carrots chantenay red cored; two rows of carrots Adelaide...
