Overwintering beans in

Posted 16-10-2008 at 09:59 PM by pjmt
Overwintering beans 'Meteor' went in tonight. Rather than a staggered double row, I tried three rows, 4" between each bean and then 8" between each row.

Most of the beans will be under a plastic cloche, and then the last foot and a half will be exposed to the elements. This year I was using fleece, and the Aquadulce Claudia didn't mind the odd -9 frosts we had in this area (with or without the fleece).

I'll try to remember to pick them in time next year too,...

Getting a wee bit nippy up here now

Posted 16-10-2008 at 08:03 PM by sewer rat
It's been about a month since my last blog entry so here's a brief update on what's been happening.
The Major news is that I now have a mains water supply - it's taken 19 months but in the end I got fed up arguiong with Scottish Water and just connected it all up myself (I did this in a previous job so know what I'm doing)
Summer crops are dying a death just now - a few courgettes left, broad beans completely cleared today, enough cukes to take to the Farmers Market this Saturday then...

... still enjoying this late summer.....

Posted 14-10-2008 at 12:23 PM by Marthaclematis
Its lasted nearly a week. Coming to an end now though. Anyway - last night we finally got around to cutting the grass at the back, it was a joint effort; whilst I raked, dh mowed and we got it done in 20 mins. I must say though, it looks GORGEOUS.... really lush and green. I don't know why, perhaps because we haven't touched it for weeks, maybe its all the rain followed by sun or maybe the seed I was throwing down over the summer has suddenly taken off. Anyway whatever, it looks really nice....

The end of the Mudpatch?

Posted 13-10-2008 at 07:08 PM by BrideXIII
Not the garden, just the mudpatch!
whilst musing on the GYO forum today, and trying to drown out the row in the kitchen whilst the fitters put the new kitchen in, I pondered....
well they started it, they saved me some of the cupboards intact, after i mentioned i need some more raised beds, so they went outside, and although they will do the job, they are UGLY.
now i am all for reclaiming and recycling, being broke, i have to be, but I hate 'ugly', still a bed is a bed.

Wine is made!

Posted 12-10-2008 at 02:05 PM by Growem
I have wine! I have wine that tastes potentially drinkable!

After fermentation, (with one added week due to not being around) I added the clearing or finings sachets. Amazing how they work. The wine was more or less clear in half an hour and then truly clear within a day.

Next came the slightly but not really tricky part of siphoning. I recruited my husband to help here, just to make sure both ends of the siphon tube statyed where they were supposed to. You siphon...
