Wine is made!

I have wine! I have wine that tastes potentially drinkable!

After fermentation, (with one added week due to not being around) I added the clearing or finings sachets. Amazing how they work. The wine was more or less clear in half an hour and then truly clear within a day.

Next came the slightly but not really tricky part of siphoning. I recruited my husband to help here, just to make sure both ends of the siphon tube statyed where they were supposed to. You siphon...

Two Weeks In

So my wine has been bubbling away for 2 weeks in our bedroom. It was put there because it's a warm room, and apparently it ferments best at temperatures between 21-28°C. The room is usually just over 22 degrees, so about perfect. It's also up on the top of a very stable dresser, well out of reach of curious toddler fingers. This alone probably makes the location a good choice.

The first few nights it was a bit disconcerting, going to bed and hearing a faint hiss coming from the other...

The Start of Apple Wine

So I did make a start on the wine finally. I had some quite nice windfall apples from my allotment from a couple of different trees. I peeled and cored them as the recipe called for it. But because I figure there must be some flavour in the core, I threw in a few bits and seeds too. The recipe said to slice the apple - I chose to mince it in my food processor. Much easier. It also said to add blueberries, but as I had none handy, I used sultanas. There were other recipes calling for raisins, and...

An Exciting Start

I already have two blogs out there in cyberspace. One about the process of trying to get married in Germany when living there as a foreigner and another about the subsequent move to the UK after Germany. If you are interested in either, drop me a line and I will let you know about them. Or if you are a clever Googler, you should be able to find them from that.
