Early harvest!

Posted 09-05-2008 at 11:04 AM by Cutecumber
Exciting times... I harvested the first new season crop at the weekend - some spring onions. They were started at the end of January in the greenhouse and have been outside since March. Some of the lettuce is ready too, but I am letting it head up a bit more.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've just finished the last of the 2007 crops - some leaf beet.

This is the first year that we've been able to harvest something fresh from the garden every month and it's...

Space - the final frontier

Posted 30-04-2008 at 03:17 PM by Cutecumber
I seem to have this weird condition whereby in my mind the garden and my pots are about 50 times bigger and more numerous than they really are. Is it treatable by modern drugs, I wonder?

As always, I am wondering exactly where I am going to put the dozens of plants that are currently growing in 3 inch pots in the greenhouse and around the garden.

I am going to have to chuck a few brassicas on the compost as there is just nowhere to put them. I've got deja vu.

Sun at last

Posted 22-04-2008 at 01:12 PM by Cutecumber
Thank goodness we actually had some sun at the weekend. Things are starting to look better.

Tomatoes need potting up, some need planting, and I'm gradually giving away those I have grown for other people. There are still about 50around and about, though.

Desperate for sun!

Posted 11-04-2008 at 10:24 AM by Cutecumber
I'm not fussed about sun, but my tomatoes want some, bless 'em.

March was so wet and cold they could really do with a boost.

Anyway, all is well in greenhouse-land with potatoes, shallots, cabbages, cauliflowers, lettuces and carrots all growing well in their final containers. They need to go outside but I am waiting for the current cold spell to pass so they're not too shocked. I also need to get the fleece out to protect the brassicas from pigeons.

Busy, busy, busy... but freezing.

Posted 25-03-2008 at 07:49 PM by Cutecumber
Forgot about this blog for a month - whoops!

It's absolutely freezing in suburban south London. I even crossed the border into Surrey today and I couldn't move my hands after a short spell outdoors.

Meanwhile, the greenhouse is kept above 4 degrees, and is filling up with young plants. And so are the windowsills in the house.

Let's see if I can remember what has been sown... in the greenhouse I think there is:

Shallots, from seed, 3 types...
