It's here at last!

I guess it was inevitable...

...blight arrived in the garden this week.

True to form, it's gone straight for the San Marzano, knocking out a Golden Sunrise en-route.

So far, Brandywine and all the small fruited plants are unaffacted but they will be discovered sooner or later.

The good thing is that I started toms off really early, so we've been eating them for six weeks already. It's a damn shame to lose any, but it could have been worse...

An Exciting Start

I already have two blogs out there in cyberspace. One about the process of trying to get married in Germany when living there as a foreigner and another about the subsequent move to the UK after Germany. If you are interested in either, drop me a line and I will let you know about them. Or if you are a clever Googler, you should be able to find them from that.

But I always find myself wanting to talk about my allotment and gardening on my other blog. Sometimes it's appropriate, but...

August plenty

Often, my veg peak in July and tail off through August. This year, however, I've tried hard to keep sowing and things have stretched out really well.

At the moment it's peak harvest (volume wise) for tomatoes and courgettes. They can get rather tedious, it has to be said.

Today I harvested my first parsnip (Avonresister). I can't stand the things, but I've grown them for my partner and mother who are very keen. I've also pulled a few Autumn King carrots - they are...

Why grow your own vegetables?

It was cooking that changed me from a flower, trees and shrub growing gardener into someone who wanted to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

When I see the wonderful choice of vegetables and salad crops that are available on market stalls and in greengrocers shops when I visit Italy it makes me want to weep at what we are offered in the supermarket. So I am back to trying to clear more of my plot to grow more veggies next year.

I have written down ideas for new recipes/food...
