Sweet potato etc

Posted 21-06-2008 at 11:37 AM by Glasshousevirgin
Everything keeping me going on every visit. Most recently the sweet potatoes went in to a newly rotovated row with 3 bags of sand mixed into it. Had 7 plants to put in (2 T65 and all 5 Beauregard) that had been in GH a month or so to sprout roots. Raked it into a ridge and planted each leaving a small depression to hold water as they evidently need plenty. I have bought a few metres of black cloth to keep the heat in as soil temperature (20C+) is supposed to be critical to success with them. ...

What I have growing to date

Posted 21-06-2008 at 09:44 AM by wornoutmumoftwo
As I said, a little of everything...

Potatoes - I have three lots growing, the first of which has the start of a flower, but I had a quick peek and they are new potatoes so I'm going to wait for them to get bigger.

Carrots - grown from seed, planted into un-composted soil and seem to be growing well though a little close together.

Leeks - in my mini greenhouse, they never seem to look as if they are growing.

Onions - they are with my carrots...

First tomato

Posted 20-06-2008 at 09:36 AM by Cutecumber
We had our first tomato this week - a Bloody Butcher fruit from an outdoor plant sown in late January. There are about three others that are ripening well (on two plants) but there will be a gap before any other varieties are ready. Next will be some Golden Sunrise by the look of it, then maybe Olivade or some of the tumbling Gartenperle.

It's definitely the earliest tomato I've had but it remains to be seen if it as tasty as those which ripen later.

I originaly started my garden back in March...

I began by sowing carrot seeds from one of those propagator sets from the pound shop...and some how I have become obsessed with gardening.

I used to HATE going outside, left the gardening to my hubby (a gardener by trade), and our poor garden was lucky if we managed to plant a few flowers in it each year.

Now?

I am claiming every inch of garden to grow veg; I've pulled up paving stones, dug...

I think it's going rather well!
Planning to earth up my potatoes on Sunday an inch or so.

No sign of my corriander seeds sprouting any time soon but I guess that is the rain and weathers fault for not being warm enough. I have an experiment going for it though (a seed in a small pot in a warm place constantly) so If that happens to germinate, I can always keep that inside.

I have this lovely feeling my Peas are going to do really well, I have an experiment Pea
