Weird and wonderful

Posted 21-05-2008 at 12:59 PM by Cutecumber
The wonderful is having fresh lettuce every day for my lunch...

...the weird is a garlic plant around which are sprouting chive-like shoots. Very odd.

So far, we've had some little Gem lettuce, some Salad bowl and Bijou. The cool spring has been great for lettuce.

One the way are some Sangria, Freckles and Chartwell - all new to me this year - and then more salad bowl and little gem which are still in their modules.

Been kinda busy

So what's new since I last wrote ?
Well I had my first two days off since Feb 2007 - went to a wedding over in Belfast - ace craic !
On the veg front, the tunnel floor is rapidly filling with growing cabbages, french beans, cukes, and there are lettuces in every available nook and cranny. The strawbs in the hanging baskets are going great guns too.I still have a lot of calabrese of my own to plant out, some caulis, sprouts, calabrese and lettuce for the local Garden Centre to pot on...

Got to the lottie, spuds looking good, also overwintering garlic and onions. The strawberry bed I was going to dig out is covered with flowers, so I'm glad I didn't have time. I'll let it crop this year then drastically thin or remove - I've already put six new plants in another bed. The comfrey is growing well - I've hear you shouldn't let it flower, but the bees love it!! Put string round and over the summer PSB cos the pigeons have been nibbling. Planted out runner beans Polestar and 4 borlotta....

Invalided

Struggling to keep up with everything during my knee problem of last few weeks but having had arthroscopy last week hoping to be more capable soon.
Plants powering away on all fronts since 10 days of sun and a few of rain. Glasshouse plants doing well too but many finding it too hot already so put outside to cope.
Quite a few self seeded plants going well too. A nice crop of coriander very aromatic and ready ahead of sown ones. Also potatoes and fennel / dill too and hoards of sunflowers....
