Potatoes and Basil.

Posted 13-04-2008 at 11:15 PM by thyme
Went to allotment on Thursday, planted a few rows of potatoes: Pentland Javelin and a couple of rows of Pink Fir Apple not sure if it is too early to plant those but I was concerned that they were looking a bit sad i.e, sprouting shoots looked long and straggly but the potatoes themselves were getting smaller and shrivelling maybe they always do that when they are chitting.

As I was talking to another allotment holder they spotted a fox; as I turned to see it I was a bit shocked at...

Progress

Bookcase thing out of shed, just need holes for drainage and can use for a planter.

Space dug for 2x1 raised bed, now constructed, but unfortunately the hoop to go over is no good so didn't plant anything out yet. The 1x1 will go in this week and be used as a seed bed.

Built up tent greenhouse, repotted toms to go in it. Also repotted peppers and a melon.

We've been away and missed the snow...

Posted 13-04-2008 at 09:23 PM by Marthaclematis
We've had a wintery week in Yorkshire and whilst we were away it snowed here.. too cold up there, it was windy and hailing but it didn't 'lay'. We got home to five buckets full of thriving potatoes. I've earthed them up for the last time so now its just a matter of letting them grow, I reckon in another 10 weeks we'll be eating them! I bought some poppy and some foxglove seeds which are in the downstairs lounge in trays waiting to sprout. I love both those flowers and really hope I can nurture...

At Last!! 13th April got to the lottie

Posted 13-04-2008 at 06:41 PM by rustylady
Spent yesterday in town with daughter and grandchildren. Forecast for today was carp, but it turned out a nice day. Actually got the lottie and planted out my shallots and onions that have been sitting in celltrays in the cold greenhouse. Loads of weeds growing, managed to get some of the big ones out, daughter helped a bit and grandson found loads of worms. Broad beans are carp, esp Sutton - won't bother overwintering again. They have flowers, but the plants are very windblown and spindly....

Posted 12-04-2008 at 10:48 PM by heyhay1984
Get 1x1 raised bed area dug over, construct, plant leaves, beetroot, spring onion, garlic

Pot on any plugs that are getting squashed

Harden off all plugs except sweetcorn & celery

Roundup the far end (brassicas and legumes end) and dig in for brassicas to go in at end of month

Get 2x1 raised bed going, use half as seed bed and then more leaves/roots

Get onion/carrot rows going

Get spud row dug and plant...
