Square Foot Gardening

Posted 27-04-2008 at 09:32 PM by Genuisscuffy
Devised by an American guy called Mel Bartholomew - its a way of people growing lots of different veggies in a small plot. I started mine last year as a bit of an experimentAttachment 103The idea is that you place a different veggie in each of the square foot areas - I grew shallots, garlic, lettuce (head and cut and come again), beetroot, radishes, cues, baby sweetcorn, carrots, aubergine, dwarf french beans, spring onions, tomatos, courgette (one climbing) and mangetout. Runners in a pot,...

Weekend woes

Posted 27-04-2008 at 09:09 PM by Auntyrynam

Well another weekend has come and gone, had a great time on the allotment and garden. Potatoes finally in, me and hubby on our hands and knees well grounded I call that. Have some really good neighbours on the site, very friendly and helpful there really is a sense of community which is sadly lacking these days!!

In the greenhouse we have been busy, thought we would start our cabbages, sweetcorn and brocoli, well I am new to this lark, any thoughts?

So excited...

Pulled up the Sutton bored beans that I'd tried to overwinter - they were rubbish. Aquadulce looking OK, plenty of flowers but the plants are small. The only things that are really growing well are the...

carrots in tubs

Posted 27-04-2008 at 04:55 PM by sallyw
has anyone grown carrots or parsnips n barrels or containers with success? i watched the big dig on sky all about allotments and was surprised to see that they were having success in growing root veg this way apparantly carrot flies will only affect carrots low to the ground so if they are raised up they are not affected also no stones etc in compost means perfectly formed veg,, is this as simple as it sounds?

Yesterday was the warmest day yet....

Posted 27-04-2008 at 01:42 PM by Marthaclematis
Very sunny and about 70 degrees it seemed. we were busy with house and garden. Walked miles yesterday finding the plumbers merchant but were rewarded eventually by the biggest array of bathroom equipment I've ever seen! We bought a shower, a pump and a screen. Then we walked to the Dreams Beds and bought two singles for the spare room. The wallpaper is got and the paint colours chosen. Oh and tiles too, we've chosen them. On the garden front all the bulbs are now planted and all the seeds...
