  • Winter onions, moving/replanting?

I have been growing winter onions in boxes over the winter. I now have beds set up and ready to use, is it ok to lift the onions and replant in these beds? Obviously taking a fair piece of surrounding compost with it.

When you say boxes what do you mean? Seed trays? Also where are you and where have these onions been inside a greenhouse or outside? It would be better to leave them but as you say with a good rootball you should be ok.

They are in solid plastic boxes 2ft by 18" approx. Some are in greenhouse and some outside. It's just that I could do more with the space they are taking up. I'm in Dumbarton.

I moved some last year and they did ok. But it was very mild last year.
