  • where to start

    Hi
We have recently cleared the top of our garden and we have a plot 10metres by 10 metres,
but are wondering where to start and what to plant. Any suggestions please.
    Thankyou Jackie

Hello Jackie and welcome to the Forum I'm a back garden grower too - as are lots of us.
Start thinking about what you like to eat - and want to grow. Then we can help talk you through growing them.
Also, is your plot sunny or shaded, any trees around?
Do you have a greenhouse or somewhere indoors to start seedlings off?
Photos help us to give you ideas - and we're nosey and like to see other people's gardens

        Hello and welcome Jackie,

If the soil is cleared there is not much to grow right now. Best practice would be to mulch and cover to allow nature to fertilise and prevent weeds from taking over. Next month the early seeds can go in for heated germination if you have a greenhouse/porch/windowsill. It will develop from there, but preparing the soil fertillity is winters task.
Look up a few when to sow charts from seed merchants and the RHS and decide what you'd like so you can buy in good time.
Expect failures and also some seasons just laugh at the 'rules' so it's an adventure, but tasting something you grew yourself is magic.
Stick around and ask away, lots of great advice here and they are mostly friendly (mostly).

Hello Jackie & welcome to the Jungle. Ask your question to 10 growers & you'll most likely get 10 different answers.......My main points would be:
What do you like to eat?
Do you want to grow in raised beds or open beds with paths or maybe Square Foot Gardening?
Are you getting or have you got a Greenhouse?
It's a perfect time for planning so get a pen & paper out, browse through some seed catalogues & troll the vine...............beware the Vine is planned for an update soon so may be down for a couple of days but don't worry we will come back bigger & better...........
          Good Luck

hi thank you for your reply
Our garden is a east west and gets the sun most of the time, we are planing what grow at the minute lol. There is one tree but not in our garden, we dont have a greenhouse just a medium sized portable greenhouse. Once weve cleared it of all the stones i will try and post some picture. Jackie
