  • Where to start? Help needed please!

Ok so here's the plan for the next few weeks (looking toward last week of June and first few of July)
    - Get lottie cleared of weeds and tidied up to the point of being able to sow some bits
    - Get greenhouse up and get some bits in there too

Problem is I have NO idea what to sow/start off that time of year so what if like to know...
    1. What should I plant in either ground or potted up in GH for a quick harvest this year?
    2. What should I sow on the plot this time of year?
    3. What should I sow in the greenhouse this time of year?

I know there are very basic questions and I could google it BUT I trust you lot more than Mr Google for good advice lol
Give me all your suggestions and I will order myself up some seeds

So you want plants to get in the ground as you get the plot cleared? I'd get down to the garden centre and buy beans and sweetcorn, which you can bung straight in. They will also have lettuce seedlings, but I'd either buy 'living salad' from the supermarket (approx 100 plants for approx 75p) or sow in trays - they will not need the greenhouse. You can sow courgette and seeds now and they will romp away with the better weather.

I'd buy tomato and pepper plantss from the GC to capitalise on your otherwise empty greenhouse. No shame in spending a few bob to get a crop rather than not.

Oh - and winter brassica seedlings will be in the GC too (sprouts and stuff) - but remember to net these when you plant them out.

As far as sowing goes I'd go for things like chard, spinach or perpetual spinach, kale, peas, beans, carrots and beetroot.

Oriental veggies are brilliant for sowing from mid July onwards (they bolt really easy so an early or late sowing helps stop this).
Many of them are very fast growers that can be ready to eat (albeit small) in 30 - 60 days. I like the giant red mustards, Japanese spinach and Emporer's savoy. Many can also cope with very cold temps so they would give you some winter nibbles.
How about strawberries? If you fancy them - shove em in as they can always be moved as your lottie design developes.

I'm a big chard and kale fan. they stand for ages and cope through winter (you can pick sparingly) and when we get a little more light and warmth come early Spring they will kick in again. Remember to save a space for giant garlic and garlic in late Sept and Oct.

Great info so far - thank you! Are we still keeping up with the Monthly Vegetable Seed Sowing List on the 'Vegging Out' part of the forum - would be really handy to see what I should be doing for the next few months! xx

Take a look in supermarkets too- you might find some discounted plant bargains which have used their 'use by date!'

I get some of my plants from Vide greniers ( car boot sales) where peeps are selling off excess plants.
Freecycle, preloved etc sorts of places for someone local too???

Kristen, who was posting the Monthly Seed sowing lists hasn't been on the Vine for a while. The GYO magazine always has a list of seeds to sow each month - and July's has just landed on my doormat (with free seeds)

Get some spuds planted. Their foliage helps suppress weeds and they also help break up the soil.

Add me as another who would advise mooching on Freecycle and the other sites of that ilk.

Also, check Facebook for local groups for Gardening for freebies or other materials you may be able to scrounge. I have a few in my area and some of the stuff going for free or dirt cheap on Facebook is hard to turn down.

As is often the case, you sow a packet of seeds and use what you need when they start popping up but you may be left tens/hundreds of plants or what not left over, and if you are running a little behind they could save you those few weeks and get you back in the game.

HiMush. If you are anywhere near me I have spare tomatoes, cucumbers, cornichons, and peppers if you want them for the green house. They are still tiny as I had to sow late this year and the weather hasn't helped.
Having said that the toms are just showing their first flowers and the cusco have flowers

Car boot sales are often a decent source of low cost plants although look at the quality. At this time of year you could probably get a deal on quantity too because the sellers want to shift stock rather than chuck it. Don't forget to befriend your fellow plot holders, often they have excess plants they will swap or give away.

                              have fun.
