    What do you do with......

    weeds? I have had my plot since Nov. The owner before me used a lot of carpet to cover the plot but now most of it is in use the weeds are running amock! I spend most of my time pulling them up but dont know what to do with them after that. Any ideas? Have thought about composting them but have been told that I will just get them back again.

    Put the weeds in a plastic bag for a couple of weeks until they're mush, then put them in the compost.

      I compost all my weeds but have recently taken to putting them through a chook first!

        I compost everything (ok, I'm lucky and don't have the nasties like maretail and bindweed etc) but I reckon if it comes up again it'll be weaker and I can pull it out before it gets rampant.
        What weeds are you talking about Cornish Pixie? Some are ok to compost

          i don't get many perennial weeds luckily, but the ones i do have i stick them on the compost, never had a problem so far, though i do tend to leave my compost composting for a good 12 months.

            I compost all the annual weeds, but burn perennials like the doc leaf roots. Composting, if left for some time and if the pile is allowed to make enough heat, will kill most weeds completely.

              My problem is nettle roots! I've dug up about 20 black bin bags full of the stuff so far. Was just going to put it in my household waste bin a bit at a time cos I don't really fancy the idea of even more nettles on the plot. I've composted the leaves though. Am I being irresponsible putting the roots in the waste bin? What should I be doing with them really?

                I've put all my worst weeds into an old dustbin and filled with water. The resulting 'soup' absolutely stinks, but is a good feed for the garden. I put about a cupful in the watering can and fill up with water. Just keep adding weeds to the bin as you go along, the proportions of weeds to water isn't vital.

                  We chuck ours all on the compost also a lot of them go to the chooks! have heard that if you leave the nasty roots(couch/bindweed/thistle etc laying out in the sun for a few days this will kill them off therefore hopefully causing no trouble to your compost.)

                    I have a woody compost pile, all my couch grass, nettle roots and the tonnes of bindweed go on top of that and dry out. They compost fine that way, I just leave them on that woody heap and move it every now and again, collecting the compost from underneath.

                      vicky - I have lots of annual weeds, plus dock, thistle, bind weed, plantain, cooch grass, dandilion, nettles oh and some other plot holders poppies!
