How about pumpkins? they might do OK and will grow nicely until the first frosts start.

Get yourself to B&Q, and see what veg plants they've half killed this week Or a garden centre? My local one still had courgette, pea & runner bean plants amongst others.
Otherwise, there's still winter crops you can sow; PSB, cabbages, kale, swedes. Also beetroot & carrots can still be sown now. Then there's over-wintering onions, garlic & shallots in September.

Don't forget the humble leek. I'm popping beans of many sorts in any spare ground to keep us in soups all winter. Plus carrots and onions where I can get the ground weed free. Beetroot and courgettes are going in in a few weeks, as the seeds are going to be sown this weekend. Lettuce and salad can still be sown of course. And spuds for a winter harvest [if you keep them covered once the winter sets in].

I'm still sowing peas and beans and will continue to do so at least until the end of the month. Pumpkins would be good on new ground too as there should still be plenty of nutrients in there for them and their leaves will help to suppress further weed growth. We are considering moving to a private site soon and if we do the only thing we plan to have there for the first six months is a goat.

Hi Minty!
Overwintering crops, brassicas, broccolli, turnip, swede, sprouts are all still ok to go in, as are a late sowing of peas, mange tout, carrots, salad, lettuce, spring onions, radish etc! You'll be able to sow spring cabbages in the next 2 months, leeks can go in now and for a while yet, as can aubergines and of course overwintering garlic and onion sets in Sept / Oct! As has already been said, try the GC for any plantlets, and a late sowing of courgettes will still give you a crop if planted now!

I always feel its better to get in a late sowing of anything, rather than have the land available but with nothing growing, cos not only is it disheartening, but also allows the weeds to colonise it!
