  • Sweetcorn mystery.

I have a nice healthy raised bed of sweetcorn. Just starting to flower so no cobs on any of it yet. Doing really well... Until yesterday. I found one of the canes flat to the ground. It seems it may have been chewed about 2-3 inches above ground level. But I can't be sure and it looks as if something has attempted to dig a bit at the side of it. Year before last badgers demolished the crop of cobs. But I can't figure what would have done this so early on. The cane is too chunky for it to be a slug. (Super slug??) Strangely the cane was right in the middle of the bed too, not on the perimeter as you'd expect. Any ideas anyone?

Where abouts are you bobbin...I notice you don't have your location in your profile.
Any chance of putting a rough one in your location please?

I was wondering if it might be squirrels eating your sweetcorn

I did have a look on goooogle and they suggested raccoons!

I am in West Sussex. I hadn't thought of squirrels! But nothing's really been eaten. Maybe slightly gnawed but that's all. Do they eat sweetcorn stems?

Yep...someone on our last lottie had problems with them eating the stems early on...and then the cobs later.
