    Shed left, but who's is it?

    Hi

    I took over half an allotment last year from a lady who did not want to use it anymore. The other half of the allotment was taken over by the neighbouring allotment holders who wanted a bit extra space.

    The lady left behind a shed and the couple who have the other half of the allotment have decided to put a lock on it and appear to have claimed it. Obviously they would have known the lady who previously had the allotment as they were on the neighbouring allotment. Does this mean that they can automatically claim full use of the shed?

    I can never seem to catch them at the same time as I go to the allotment. They seem a nice couple but just wanted to know if I have any right to use the shed too? I only need to store a few tools.

    Which half of the plot is the shed on? Is your contract for half the plot or is it for the full plot?

      Its at the top of the allotment, so past the growing area and not on anyone's plot.
      I only pay for half the plot.

        On our site when this occurs it is dependant upon the shed is sited, if on your half then I would suggest it is technically yours as you pay the rent, I am sure after a polite conversation you will be able to come to a mutuality beneficial arrangement.

        just seen your reply, the lady may have gifted it to them but still worth asking if you could use it as well

          I would ask, if getting hold of them is very difficult pop a note on the shed. Most people are normally happy enough to share anyway. I wouldn't fuss about who should rightfully have it as it can cause more issues than it is worth.

            You should really have had this made clear to you at the time you took the plot on. Like when I viewed mine there was a fallen down shed on it but I was told that another plotholder had baggsied it and it wouldn't be there when I took over.

            But you are where you are and I think Norfolkgrey's answer is the most pragmatic.

              Do you have a allotment secretary who could act as go-between, either to pass on a message or may be able to give you contact details. If not, as suggested a note on the shed would seem the way to go.
