If your tools have been heat treated to maintain an edge a file won't sharpen them as they are too hard . . . hence the need for a stone. Your hoe may or may not have been heat treated . . . but I suspect your sears will have been.

When using a sharpening stone .
Don't slide towards the edge of blade you cut with
Work it away from the edge you want to create
You are trying to create a tiny burred edge of about 20 to 25 degrees on the cutting blade or tool

Let the sharpening stone run smoothly in swift action not with force

Some tools already have the guide where you run the stone up and down

Look on YouTube there are some good videos of how to do it properly

I'd also recommend invest in a cheap steel .
You can use it on thing like secateurs and scissors etc

Sharpening stones do not hone things like a steel does .

No doubt someone will have a different approach
Works for me in the meat trade
