  • Raised beds

    Hello

What is the best height for a raised bed? I was looking at using fence boards that are 150mm high????

    Thanks

That's not really a raised bed, it's more of an edged one same as I have which are great for marking the edges of beds and keeping things tidy. Mine are 2 or 3 inches deeper and the corners are nailed to short posts. I don't bury them into the ground or fill up the wooden bit although the soil fluffs up and the edges are good for retaining compost / manure etc.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sounds perfect for a raised bed to me. You can always make 'em higher later if you want, but that 6 inches will make a lot of difference in terms of soil warmth and drainage.

To increase the height a bit I've taken off 4-6inches of topsoil from the paths inbetween, lined the path with membrane and filled with woodchip. The topsoil went in the bed to help fill it. That might be a bit overkill for what you want - I'm on heavy clay and need all the help I can get!

I don't think there is an ideal height, it really depends on why you want them. I have used old scafolding planks which were about 12 inches on my plot mainly because I could get a large number of them. I am on a slight slope so having beds allows me to level it off. At home I have 3 foot raised beds built from concrete blocks, this makes it easier for the OH to weed and doubles up as seating. Ultimately both are more for how it looks then anything else.
