  • Pony poo question

Hi everyone! Hope you are all well. I've got a question:
I've spread pony poo on my beds on my lottie, only trouble is, it hasnt rotted down as much as I would've liked, but I put it down a couple of months ago....everything seems to be OK, but I was wondering - I know it should've rotted down a bit more, is there anything I can do to speed this up? Should I dig it in now, or leave it for a few more weeks?
    Many thanks in advance!

Hello stranger. Is your soil dry enough to dig?! I can't even walk up my garden to the compost bins!!! It has been so wet here we don't have any worms - think they all got washed away!

I will leave recommendations on leaving or digging in to the more expert growers, just wanted to say hi.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

Was it "fresh" poo DDL? I dont have any this year as the local gymkhana was held a mile away (normally in the field next to us) but other years I have just laid it "fresh" like on the ground and dug it in a couple of months later. Had some great tatties!

What are you planning to grow in it? I only manure my potatoe area each year and it seems to work ok for that no matter how fresh it is.

Ps Nice to see you back again stranger. Let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Shirley and Lesley - thank you so much for your help.
It's good to be back, although I must admit, I'm still in "hibernation" mode! I have been popping onto the site every now and then, checking on how everyone is getting along - although not posting anything.
Thanks for your advice - the pony poo I put on a couple of months ago, and then a couple of weeks ago is pretty fresh I think, but it can only do good cant it?
        Best wishes

Just break it up with a fork and work it into the top layer of soil. That is if your site is dry enough to do anything with at the moment. The ground round here is absolutely sodden, and we're supposed to be the driest and sunniest part of the country - HA, HA!!

Hello DDL, nice to have you back, even if it is intermittently!

I don't know how thick you've put the 'poo' on but I wouldn't waste it by digging it in. Just plant through it and let the worms take it into the topsoil.
You may need to add a bit more Nitro to the beds as it will deplete the soil of nitro a bit as it decomposes, but it will enhance the soil structure tremendously!

Thanks for that Snadger. I know you always give good advice - and as for the "no digging" it sounds good to me! Bernie

i found that if you left your pony poo on the surface it took an age to decompose so to speed things up if you don't want to dig it in, cover it as you would if you had piled up in the corner.

We get horse manure from our hairdresser (don't ask!) and pop it in our compost bins, layering it with kitchen waste - seems to work wonders, even when the weather is cold - the heat from the manure just keeps it working. Best compost ever !
