Monty Don recommended that (although he was talking about raised beds) on Gardeners World the other day

This year, instead of planting in trenches we used a dibber then raked over flat with the intention of earthing up later. Although my wife and I put in 170 spuds it could be counted in minutes rather than hours, be interesting to see if there's any difference in yields. We planted earlies on 8th March and they're already showing.

I use a bit of wood - from the base of a parasol. It's pointed - acts like a big dibber. Just ram it in a foot or so, drop spud in and cover.

No digging trenches for me! I don't even bother earth in up with this method either.

                Bulb planter?

I have heavy soil, and I use a stamp-on one from Bulldog. Its built like a brick-outhouse! More flimsy ones that I have owned, particularly the pressed-steel hand-ones, have just buckled after a few holes.

I plant all my pot-raised (9cm) plants using the bulb planter - ornamentals and veg. Its very quick, and I have some arthritis in my hands / wrists, which means that after a few holes with a trowel I'm winging and deciding that skiving off to make a cuppa would be good - which would mean that the job would never get finished!

I expect they cost a fortune ... mine came from a car boot sale for a fiver. Its got more than one lifetime's use left in it
