Default Plant Theft

OMG! I am so mad!!! I have been to my allotment every night this week except last night. When I went tonight I noticed that my little latch gate was open. On closer inspection I realised that 2 plants had been dug up and nicked! I couldn't believe it.

last year I planted these 3 little bushes in the corner of my allotment and surround them with flowers each year. Now there is only 1 left.

I'm am mad!!!!

Had it a few years ago in the UK, of all things small holly bushes from the front garden. Constabulary said they had been swamped with similar complaints, if I'd caught them I'd have whipped them with the holly!

Cheeky buggers nicked my potatoes one year, then stuck the haulms back in the ground so I didn't notice!
A few days later I noticed the haulms looked wilted and when I pulled them out all the tatties had been nicked!
At the time, I was the only one in the street in full time employment so consoled myself that some poor destitute bugger had at least had a Sunday dinner that week!

I need a guard dog, my tropical fish just aren't scary enough!! My allotment is at Penwortham Holme West allotments, right near the car park and main entrance, I guess I am an easy target, but why pull up plants!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss Clareg - if you wanna replace them, try growing something with very deep tap roots or something like berberis - might still get stolen but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the thieves have had their arms and hands sliced to bits in the process.

I'm behind the pub opposite you - there are some sad b******s around! Have you reported it to your site chairman? police? site rep?

Hi ddl, my allotment is on the other side of Liverpool road (rather than opposite you - are those Penwortham holme east?), I know where yours are, I can just see them as I drive past. Haven't reported it to anyone yet, was going to phone the police tomorrow and report it, and then try and get in touch with the site rep.

Its just bizarre, we went for another inspection and realised that someone has walked across our potato bed and squashed some wire fencing between my allotment and my neighbours. But why pull up two well established plants (that are actually prickly) that you can buy for a couple of quid!

Oh Clareg ! I understand how mad you must be. Imagine anyone making a thief of themselves for 2 wee bushes !
In situautions like that I just say I'm not letting people like that pull me down. Replant with something nice and let the scum of the earth get on with their own sad lives.

You could always try spraying them with the home brew I made last year to try to stop cabbage whites eating my crop - garlic, dried chillis, vinegar all mixed to a strong brew with water!

It made my eyes water when I sprayed it - didnt put off the butterflies though, but just imagine if you ate a plant that had just been sprayed with that stuff!

That's awful ClareG. Have you walked around your site to check nobody has your bushes newly planted in their lottie? (Mind you, your site is very big, it would be like looking for needles in hay stack).

My lottie is on the Valley Road site before you get to the Bridge Inn. I hope you don't have that happen again, it really makes you wonder about human nature.

Heard tell of a couple of tea leaves at a nearby allotment who went on a nicking spree and took tools from a shed owned by a local traveller family. It seems that when the lads get out of hospital, they've promised not to do it again

It happened at ours a while ago! The council supplied a new lock and forty keys. Funds were low in the association and there was no record of who had keys anyway so the 'comittee' decided to charge every allotment holder £10 for a key..........returnable if they gave up there allotment!

Hi all,

Well I had a good look around the allotments and my bushes are no where to be seen but I did talk to as many people as I could about it. My allotment is right near the entrance which makes it an easy target, especially as so many allotment holders don't shut the gate despite the signs asking them to.

But I'm not going to let it get me down, despite being ready to take up arms and lay traps last week, I am much calmer now!

Hi,

Just wanted to add a nice ending to this thread. I went to my allotment tonight to find two potted hosta plants left inside my allotment gate. Isn't that nice? I have no idea who left them but I appreciate it!
