    Onion Sets

    Having planted my onoin sets & garlic in Nov, alot of them feel squishy?, although they still seem to be growing.

    Does the bulb grow below the originaly planted onion/clove

    How do you know they are squishy? Mine are covered with eacrth (just) and I haven't disturbed them. I guess they have to metamorphose (new word) in some way to make the new ones.

      The tops of them are just showing above the soil

        The sets swell to form the onion bulb. A new bulb does not form underneath the set. Swelling won't start until the day length increases. If the green shoots aren't dying off then they are OK. Just forget about them if you can.

          Once they first begin to sprout onion sets quite often feel soft (not exactly squishy), then the bulb begins to swell once there is sufficient green tops and, in the case of autumn planted sets, the days start to grow longer (Next Tuesday!!!!!!! Hooray!!!!!!).
          Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

              Green shoots are doing fine so fingers crossed, they've not rotted ( hopefully )

                The onion 'set' is just a storage device to keep the plant alive until it produces leaves and roots. After that the outer part of set just rots away leaving growth coming from the basal plate!
