  • Onion sets, what am I supposed to do?

    Hello all,

Just got my load of seeds from the allotment shop. I think I over ordered, oops! (Typical newbie I suppose ).

But my question is regarding onion sets, I have to big bags of them. When should I plant them? And if its no time soon, how should I store them?

    Many thanks!

In the light and just, frost free! That way if they do sprout at least the sprouts will be healthy!

PS Plant them in early or late Spring, depending on where you live!

Store them cool, dry & light. Usually plant out onto the lottie late Feb or early March, but you could start some off in cell trays in a cold or cool greenhouse early Feb. Hope you like onions as you have so many.

Thank you all for your advice, I guess somewhere in the garage would be a suitable place to keep them then? And yes, I do like onions, but I'm guessing I'll need recipes for caramelised onions, onion jelly, onion soup... onion cake?

              Where are you mapcr77?
I'm in SW France and my onions are going in during the next week. The garlic is in already.

Can I take it then that nobody would suggest planting onion sets now? I get my lottie at the weekend and would love to have SOMETHING growing in it other than weeds!!! Good luck with all yours by the way mapcr77
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

I think they get planted either autumn or spring time. You can plant garlic now I believe.

I'm in Leicester, suffering miserable weather so I guess nothing can go in yet... Anyway I still have to make the raised beds and sort out the plot. And thanks Moggssue and good luck to you too!
