  • My compost plan - some advice please

Since acquiring my plot last summer I have dug and removed as many weeds as I can. I piled up all the weeds and roots still in the soil, mostly couch grass, until I was ready to decide what to do with them.
My plan is to have 3 compost containers. The first a wooden slatted composter which has been really good and composted well. I also have a large plastic composter where I plan to store compost before I use it as well as pre-used compost from pots etc. I also have a large plastic drum with a good tight lid. After seeing plenty of tips on this on the forum, I plan to use this for the weeds, filling it with water, letting it rot and then using any smelly liquid as a liquid feed before emptying into the main composter.

My question is what to do with the soil still attached to the huge lumps of couch grass root. Do I allow to dry out and then shake off and return to the plot? or do I put everything, including soil, into the plastic drum and allow to rot down?

    Your thoughts would be appreciated

I generally pull off any big lumps of soil, then break the lumps up, check for roots then ad it back to the bed before trying to drown my couch grass. If it's bad on your plot, you'll fill a plastic drum faster than you think, and you don't want to waste space on something that doesn't need to be there.

Besides, no point in wasting good soil, and you may even find that if too much winds up in the plastic bin that the whole thing turns to mud and the weeds start regrowing!

Shake the mud off into a sieve and then sieve the soil back onto the plot. Put weeds into barrel.
      Or
Shake the mud off onto the wooden bin in case any roots go with it, then put weeds into barrel.
