They're useful when you plant out seedlings. For example I raise lettuces in a small pot and then dib them out into modules. When they've got a bit of a root system I pop them in the garden. Mini-cloches stop the slugs getting at them (which is the reason I don't sow direct).

I use smaller bottles on top of canes to stop me poking my eye out and i use bottles on shorter canes with netting over them - to support the netting over my strawberries for example. i use larger pop bottles as lids over pots to stop the cat sitting on germinating seeds on the window sill. Also, when i plant pumpkins out I put pop bottles over them for protection for the first week. Also, i use bottles sunk into my tomato grow bags to direct water to their roots.

lettuces, young seedlings, warming up the soil if you leave the lid on! Protect courgette plants until they get bigger
