  • Mice in my Greenhouse :(

I've had my greenhouse for a month or so. I've been sowing various bits & bobs. However I noticed that my peas sown in guttering on Friday have been decimated just two days after sowing. I've also noticed that the pumpkins sown in pots have been dug out as well as a few broad beans, yet the pots have not been upturned. I can only put it down to mice. Does anyone have any advice as to what can be done. Goodness knows how the little blighters are getting in.

As a precaution i've reset my peas & put them in my shed instead. Nothing else appears to have been touched though, cucumbers, sweetcorn, etc.
I'd welcome any advice folks may have.

Yes, pre chit your peas or start them off somewhere else. They don't eat them once they have started. Get a few snapper traps down with some peanut butter on, they work brilliantly.

I have the same problem every year....

I've got some sweet little mice in one of my greenhouses.

I acquired some plastic sweet jars. You know the ones, the big plastic ones with the palm sized top.
I remove the lid, (carefully) cut the bottom off and then place the jar firmly over whatever plant I want to protect.
The plant grows up through the middle.

It keeps the mice off. 99% successful with snails and slugs too.

      And no resort to killing...
Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.

Never tried it, but I understand sprinkling chilli powder above and below the seeds makes them leave well alone. If you hear a high pitched squeal and see mice shooting out with steam coming out of them, I was wrong ...

That's an ok method for one plant but when you have a few trays of peas or dozen broadies it doesn't quite work ...and they breed rapidly!

Snap Traps which are far more humane than poison.

Feed the soil, not the plants.

Thanks folks, I can't quite work out how on earth they have managed to climb up the side of a plastic flimsy pot & take the broad bean seed & not even tip it over

In the past, I've put seed trays in one of those blue plastic crates you get from greengrocers. Then balanced the tray on flower pots, placed the right way up and positioned towards the centre, creating an overhang.
                That worked.

They breed, yes, but they're territorial, so the figure is more or less constant.

I hang my peas-in-guttering from the roof to stop the mice getting them.

I have 4 mouse traps in the greenhouse, baited all year round. Only takes them a matter of moments to destroy something precious to me.
