  • Hello - Allotment in waiting

    Hi everyone
I've had an email this week to say I'm now top of the waiting list for a half plot at my first choice of allotment sites (there are three sites). The person managing them doesn't seem to think I will have to wait all that long and the renewals are due in April. I've subscribed to the magazine and have been lurking a while, so trying not to get too over excited and buying loads of things whilst I am waiting for 'that' email.

A bit about me, I was practically raised on a commercial plant nursery run by my grandfather, had my own little garden aged about 12 (complete with pond) and lived on a small holding breeding rare breed hens and ducks for a while. Sadly, I now live in a rented house where I am not allowed to grow anything (think the landlady had disasters with previous tenants) and my garden is literally grass right up to the edges all around. So I signed up for an allotment as my surrogate garden. I also have two teenage sons and three dogs.

    Looking forward to reading more.

      Hello Janice and welcome!

Won't offer any advice as it sounds like you probably know way more than me already!

What kind of dogs have you got?
I also have three, a Rhodesian ridgeback, a (mental) lurcher and a geriatric whippet

Welcome Janice. Lots of useful advice here - but quite a few nutters as well!
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
            Pumpkin pi.

                        Helcome to the vine,

If you do not get chance to grow many things from seed yourself it is always great to keep an eye out in charity shops and car boot´s, i know of a lot of gardeners that sell on their spare plants for pence

Hope you get your letter soon and have a wonderful time thinking, planning and planting
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Yes, I've picked up a few bargain plants this way in the past...usually flowers but I do remember seeing tomatoes, cabbages and onions on sale too. I only got my allotment last year so never bothered with veg before then.....whereas NOW I find myself looking only at veggies!!! Hope you get your allotment soon - having one is just THE best thing ever!!! Hard work at times but incredibly satisfying, fulfilling and food grown yourself tastes amazing!

I plan to grow a few extra tomatoes, french marigolds, cosmos etc this year to give to my friend Linda who runs a small cat sanctuary - anything to help her get extra funds as she's given us some lovely oldies to foster since 2009 It's the least I can do to help out.
