fruit on the lottie advice

There is a wire netting fence 4ft high between my plot and a public footpath, but we still get bottles, cans and anything else they have finished using, thrown over. I also have 2 compost bins next to the fence and the lids get thrown off and into the road or further. One bin they use to try and knock over, until I put lots of bit of wood around the base to hold it in place. I'm hoping to build a pallet compost bin there, which might not be so appealing. (The site is not actually in a bad area and has nice private houses directly opposite, it's just that folk walk past on their way into town and it's also next door to a park).

Raspberries might work well to some degree, but it could also mean that everyone sees them as a freebie as they walk past. I have to admit, I did plant a blackberry to grow along my fence, with the intention of it been for walkers to pick as they went by. Little children can't help themselves and it's a pleasure to see them get excited at finding something to eat. Future fruit and veg growers. I have lots of blackberry plants at the other end of my plot for me, and I had planned from the start that the edge was kind of my community patch, with flowers and stuff.

You could always do the 3 pallet compost system along there, which would create a solid boundary. Gooseberry bushes and artichokes would deter folk, as both are like lethal weapons.

Get a copy of every gardening book that your library carries.

Also, check your allotment rules. Some do not allow fruit to be planted near paths, or for hedges to be planted at all.

I have a 4 pallet compost bin that was already there full of rubbish and wire I have taken most the stuff out. It would look like I will be having the same problems you have had with the bottles and cans etc. I was wondering the best place to buy Raspberries bushes from as funds are low at the mo?

Hi I have been reading loads on the pc and thanks for the inf. looking a bit like lots of white snow again so will I ever get going on my plot

Wilkinson's sell 1 year plants for �1, other folk on here have mentioned offers at Lidl etc. You could always have a look around your site and see if anyone has established bushes, and leave a note asking if they want rid of any.

I gave away loads to anyone on the allotment who wanted some and then also had 4 or 5 people come via freecycle to collect more.

You don't need to buy them. Scrounge some cuttings off another plotholder. I've just Freecycled loads of mine

Seriously, if a place looks like a bin, it will be used as a bin. Can you bear to pick up the litter? Nag the council to provide litter bins?
We have the same problem with our cycle lane, which is on the school run. It is clean & clear in the holidays, then an absolute state on school days: it is very telling that children are given Coke, crisps and chocolate for their breakfast.

I've just popped out to the postbox and my hand touch a rosemary hedge at the end of my pathway, as I needed to steady myself on the now slippery snow. So as the smell of rosemary floated up to me, I thought a rosemary hedge might be a better option for you. As it's solid all year, whereas raspberries only provide full cover for part of the year.

In terms of rubbish been thrown onto your plot, it might have seemed a lot once you took over. But now it's clear, it will be just a matter of picking up a few bits, whenever you visit the plot. I'm just thankful my site is not nearer to chip shops or burger outlets, as that really would require a constant tidying up process.

I work in a school and also have an allotment on the oter side of the path at the back of the school, I think what you are mistaking for breakfast is either from their packed lunches or from money they were give to pay for their dinner but spent on crap instead.

We used to have a fairly serious litter problem on the allotments from the kids but we now have a 7 foot fence alongside the footpath and it appears that most of the kids are way to lazy to raise thier arms to throw the rubbish over so now most of the rubbish ends up on the footpath so the council have to clear it.

That is when I use the cycle path. I pick up as much as I can every day, and it's all back again the next morning.

We have the same problem, a school behind our house, it's an infant school too, so all the little darlings are deposited there by mummy or daddy who must know that their kids are eating crisps and drinking fizzy drinks at 8.30am and also that they're dropping the litter. Mind you when waiting to pick them up in an evening these same parents use the opportunity to clear the rubbish out of their cars by throwing it through the windows and I can't blame the kids for that as it frequently comprises of emptied ash-trays. Don't suppose we can expect too much from the kids if that's the example they're being set.

I found beer bottles and cans are the most items just flung about the Council will get a letter if it continues.

I have put up a few branches to fill in the big gap as to try and reduce the rubbish.

If I found my child dumping rubbish he would get a thick ear but as many say people have lost the value of learning their children good habbits.

Anyway will get it sorted either way when the snow goes.....
