  • Found and Lost

Found: Mid year we got the news that we could have a half allotment locally. Started to cultivate as had been left for some time due to previous owners health problems. Nettles knee high. Laid down cover to supress weeds. Started to plan, order and sow seeds at home for later in year.
Lost: Local council gave six weeks notice to all allotment holders that land not being renewed with owners and giving us option to either pull up crops now and leave by end of Dec, or by arrangement, pull crops in March. Either way, have to get out.
Feel sorry for those that have been on plot for some time as there was inspiration to newcomers on what could be achieved. Council have said they are looking for alternative site, but in location I live, cannot see it within easy walking distance.
What a start for new veg growers. There, got it off my chest.

Scotti - are you anywhere near Fulmer/Farnham? I think there are a couple of plots going in that locality - I get mine next week (I hope!) and there seem to be a couple of others not being used. If you are in the right locality, pm me for details ...

Otherwise, fingers crossed you find something local to you very soon. What a downer, hopefully your local council can find an alternative site.

How sad - it's a pity they didn't know about this when you took over 6 months ago - it's not really enough time to get your teeth into allotment gardening - I do hope they can find you something else close by.

Trouble is the people concerned are employed & not elected.
What you need to do is to approach your local councillor(s) and see if there is any thing they can do for you.

On the agreement you signed, what was the period of notice?
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

Thanks for info. Farnham is a bit too far away as I am unable to drive because of illness I have, and local transport networks are not good. Hope someone else will be able to use the plots and don't find themselves in the situation we were in - that being on a waiting list for almost a year before being offered a plot. I think because of the popularity of allotments there are more half plots on stream so that they can satisfy some of the demand. I wish you well in your recent acquisition and happy gardening. Scotti.
