  • Fire trouble

Well I've been in bother today for having a fire.
Site rep said to me it would be ok as long as the wind was blowing in the right direction.
Well our site is surrounded by houses so whatever the right direction is beyond me.
Anyway was burning the old trees I've had removed and the branches of the other trees I've had trimmed.
Anyway site rep collers me on my way out and complains that the fire shouldn't have gone ahead due to wind direction (towards his house) and I was in the wrong for letting other plot holders bring there rubbish to burn aswell.
How can I stop other folk from burning there stuff maybe should have been a fire warden .
Has anyone else had trouble burning exessive trees off there plot.
When you have a hammer in your hand everything around you starts looking like a nail.

Unfourtunatley there are no rules reguarding fires, at least in our neck of the woods so i cant see what the problem is.
All our council ask is that you warn your neighbours that you intend to have a fire and maybe leave it till after 6pm but its not a law and you can do it anyway .
I really dont think that most fires need to happen with all the recycling sites around but hey, sometimes you may need too i suppose but it really pees me off when smoke bellows over our washing at 2 pm on a summers day.

I think all pepole want is a bit of thought.

No bonfires allowed on our site and there is a notice on the front gate to say so, with the threat of eviction for those that do. Do your site rules not say anything about bonfires?
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

They say fires are allowed .
I walked the boundaries and didn't find any washing out all around the site so lit it at 3.45

We are allowed fires but one witch that always causes trouble complained about me and others too
i told her top p*** off and carried on with my fires no more problems off her but now i just ignore the idiot allotments should all be allowed to burn rubbish at least i do and others on site do.
skip comes once a year if the plots were not allowed to get in such a state when people left
            There would be no need.
I come here to garden not leave rubbish till the skip comes when they get organised i will
            till then fires are go

As a rule I don't have a fire but I had 9 trees to get rid of .
I chopped the thick stumps up and give the to a local elderly gentleman who as a log burner .
I don't have a giant shredder and the site never gets a skip so I thought burning them then digging in the ashes was best way of removing them.

Thankfully it's very rare people have fires on my site as I hate the smell with a deep intensity. One guy used to gave a few and the damp smoke made me leave my plot for the day on more than one occaision. No thought for others at all in that case and if he'd carried on I would have had a word. Thankfully nobody on our site is as rude as some people and thankfully we never tell each other to **** off.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I absolutely love the smell of a nice bonfire!
We have a rule of no fires before 3pm, although thats under review ATM to see about different times for different seasons.
I can understand fully that people in summer want to sit, have a BBQ, dry their clothes etc without smoke everywhere!

I generally have one fire a year at the allotment, to clear up the old beans, sweetcorn plants, the old strawberry straw goes on.. around bonfire night, take the kids up the allotment, few sparklers, something warm to drink.. have the fire, watch some fireworks.

It is really all about being sensible.

                          Indeed .

One query though, why do you burn your spent beans, sweetcorn etc? I find they compost very well which I use to dress the beds in the spring, wouldn't want to lose that benefit.

On our site bonfires are only allowed after 3.00pm Nov 1st to Last day of Feb. Loads of gardeners moan about the ruling saying they want fires at anytime throughout the year but I'd bet my last two quid the same people would complain just as much if they were unable to tend their plot because of a neighbours smoke. I went down the lottie about 3.30 yesterday to pick veg for tea and was forced into retreat by a neighbour burning roofing felt and creosoted boards. The smoke was so acrid it smarted the eyes, I'd have been well miffed it that had happened on a day I'd planned on working the plot.

I'd be more than miffed about that happening at any time. Totally irresponsible behaviour.
