today i emptyed the ash out of the fire bin into the compost heap , is this ok to do or will it harm the soil structer when i mix it in next year ?

I understand it is OK, but ash of BBQ briquettes is not. -
Depends what you are burning. If it's just wood ash then it's beneficial but other materials can be toxic, i.e. coal, chemicals in/on wood?I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!Comment

Indeed wood ash is good /coal bad. But I don't bother composting just chuck it around flowering/fruiting plants.Comment
