  • At the end of my tether..........

I have had my allotment for 7 years. We inherited Mare's Tail and Bindweed which has gradually got worse and worse despite my best efforts to dig out the roots. I am now ready to rage serious war! Can anybody recommend anything that will rid me of them forever? I've always avoided weed killer but I'm at the point now where I feel the stronger and more toxic the better!! Any suggestions of what to use and when would be much appreciated

Have you seen the last thread on the main page entitled "Horsetail/ marestail. It just about says it all about the vile stuff! My step mum in law has a garden full of it and we sent her some " Curtail"(oh dear my predictive txt dropped in "Curtains " there by mistake, now that would have confused you) as it was recommended. It also says you can plant after grounds been treated and I guess cleared. So ok for crops but I don't think you ever eradicate it, just have to be content with some measure of control. As for bindweed (god you are unlucky) same really. Pull out all the bits you can. Their roots are both mega deep.
It is soul destroying but good luck.

Bind weed is a far bigger problem (I too have both on my plot) as it throttles the crops. I go for pulling out and chopping back a bit every time I go to the plot. I choose not to use chemicals as I'm not comfortable with the risks and most reports I've written seem to indicate they don't fully work anyway.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Kurtail will get rid if both mares tail and bindweed although it is expensive.
