  • Dilemma, some advice please

Ok so I got my allotment back in March, it was a right mess. I have started to see some improvements, but this weather is not helping. Anyway my dilemma is, I am starting to put in paths and I completed one today, in between torrential downpours. I am looking at two more paths either side of the allotment. On one side there is a blackberry bush in the way and on the other side there is a row of strawberries in the way. Do I, remove the blackberry bush and plant it elsewhere or do I dig up the strawberries?

Hi GSQ - we had a sort of similar dilemma. We took on an overgrown allotment at the beginning of April this year. We think our bushes are tayberries but they are a blackberry cross and just as pirckly. Ours were L shaped and we have taken out two thirds but they are right where we will wish to have a path so eventually we will be taking them out. They take up an awful lot of room. I prefer to have a raspberry bed - more able to control it. Your strawberries should be flowering and fruiting about now. If they are not, they may be past their best though everything is late this year with the weather and all. You could then take them out and buy new stock if you like strawberries and plant them in a more convenient place.
A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows

What's currently either side of the allotment?

GSQ - I always recommend holding off doing any permanent paths as often in the first year you change your minds/use the plot differently to the way you think you will use it.

If you have fruit either side, could you put your walkway just inside the fruit areas?

Perhaps a photo of the plot would help?

*However, blackberries are 2 a penny usually, and strawbs get exhausted after 3 years so you may have to move those anyway. Depends on which you value more, I suppose...
