  • Bean poles

I have just read an article on differing types of bean poles ( a real thriller I know) and one suggestion was filling overflow pipe with sand and using that. The argument being it doesn't rot or harbour pests, does anyone do similar?

Sounds like a lot of potch - and expense. How would you fill the pipe with sand?
Hazel sticks and homegrown bamboo for me.

You would need a narrow funnel & fine sand.

Could you cork the ends and fill them with water?

Not just me being a sceptic then, I also wondered if the beans would be able to climb effectively. Maybe we need the vines very own mythbusters team

Mine has iron from a bed frame for uprights, old fishing rods for the horizontal then canes for the beans to grow up.

Just good old bamboo for me, if stored out the ground over winter they keep for years and I only have to replace a few every now and again due to breakages but that's more from the ones I use to support the pea mesh than from the ones for the beans.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
